CONVENING AND INTRODUCTIONS
Chair Lisa Neuson called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm.
Lisa Neuson, Caryl Sherman, and Arthur Stuckey.
Others Present: Library Commissioner Barbara Mackenzie (Rohnert Park), Library Commissioner Jason Merrick (Cotati), Rohnert Park City Council Liaison Susan Adams, Public Services Division Manager Lana Adlawan, Interim Branch Manager Jennifer Duran.
Not present Barbara Utter, Hanna Taylor, Friends of the Library Liaison Pam Novelly and Cotati City Council Liaison Wendy Skillman.
No members of the public present.
REPORTS & UPDATES
LIBRARY COMMISSIONERS’ REPORT
Commissioner Barbara Mackenzie reported policies on docents and art shows is under review. Commissioner Mackenzie extended an invitation to become planning members of the Art Committee. Friday morning’s weekly library program “Community Coffee” from 10-11 a.m. is a great opportunity to talk to people and to talk about anything. The Library Commission Finance Committee is planning to allocate surplus monies toward a theme of creating “Welcoming Spaces”, for example, uniform signage and clean and freshly painted uniform looking facilities to welcome patrons from branch-to-branch. Commissioner Jason Merrick attended a library conference in Calgary. The conference focused on capital raising and campaigns working with stakeholders Friends and Foundation groups. Commissioner Merrick is liaison to the Sonoma County Public Library Foundation.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Public Services Division Manager Lana Adlawan reported that the Sonoma County Library News monthly communication is formatting its focus on values. August’s value was “Gratitude.” Among the many data collected through Beanstack, a staggering 54,000 titles were read by summer reading participants during Summer Reading, June 1-August 10! Several library branches report they are seeing more patrons coming in with lost materials since we went fine free on July 1. Director Hammond has enjoyed two “Meet the Director” dates at Roseland and Sonoma Valley. Forty-two attendees to the Roseland “Meet the Director” event on Thursday, July 18. Upcoming renovations to Rohnert Park-Cotati Library include: increasing shelving to World Language collection in children’s area, adding slat wall to all endcaps in children’s and teen areas, replacing two area rugs and preschool tables and chairs in children’s area, and adding branch public hydration station.
BRANCH MANAGER’S REPORT
Interim Branch Manager Jennifer Duran reported that program plans for fall are well under way and an infusion of new program flyers is forthcoming for a wide variety of programs for families, youth and adults. Here is just a hint at what is coming this fall. Adult Services Librarian Joe Jennings is launching a new book discussion program entitled World Traveler Book Club. The book group will meet monthly from 6:30-7:30 each last Monday of each month. On Monday, September 30, our readers and participants will have traveled to Singapore through reading The River’s Song by Suchen Christine Lim. Pick up a copy of this book at the adult information desk, and all book club copies are courtesy of the Friends of the Rohnert Park-Cotati Library who provided the funding for. Youth Services Librarian Kate Nicolson-Willard is launching Fiber Arts for Youth for ages 8 and older. Each month the class will meet at 4 pm to learn a new skill including sewing on September 17, knitting on October 18, weaving on November 12 and embroidery on December 17. All supplies provided and registration ahead is required for the Fiber Arts program. Our forum room is all set to be a polling site for the upcoming November 5 elections from 6 am to 9:30 pm. The new Branch Manager Phil Hoeft is set to begin on September 16.
YOUTH MEMBER’S REPORT
Currently we do not have a youth member on the Board.
FRIENDS OF THE ROHNERT PARK-COTATI REGIONAL LIBRARY REPORT
Barbara Mackenzie reported that the current fund balance for the Friends is approximately $238,000. The members are busy preparing for the October (fall) Book Sale, beginning the evening of October 2 for members only, and for all October 3-5.
CITY COUNCIL LIAISONS’ REPORTS
Susan Hollingsworth Adams reported that the City of Rohnert Park has formed a Homeless Task Force and is increasing budget to as much as $450,000 to assist with cleanup, additional bedding, emergency cots, and transportation to Petaluma COTS..
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF PAST MEETING
The minutes of the April 16, 2019, meeting were approved following a motion by Lisa Neuson and seconded by Art Stuckey.
No public comments at this meeting.
No Action Items discussed.
Commissioner Jason Merrick reported on the success of Library’s table at Cotati Kids Day. Barbara Mackenzie reported that Founder’s Day is not being held this year. The LAB has in past years held a table at this community event. Ideas for other connections with community were discussed. Hosting a Chamber of Commerce event was brought forth as a strong possibility and will be discussed once the new Branch Manager Phil Hoeft begins in mid-September.
