Sebastopol Library Advisory Board Meeting
December 4, 2019, 4:30 p.m.
Location: Sebastopol Regional Library, 7140 Bodega Ave, Sebastopol, CA 95472

Present: Mary Shiff, Jennifer Hunter, Helena Whistler, Stephen Zollman (Library Commissioner), Michael Carnacchi (City Council Liaison), Sue Fujita (Friends of Sebastopol Library), Mathew Rose (Sebastopol Regional Library), Lana Adlawan (Sonoma County Library Public Services Division Manager)

1. Mary Shiff, Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Agenda approved and October 2019 meeting minutes were approved as amended.

 

2. Public Comment: None.

 

3. Announcements: Ralph Johnson resigned from the Library Advisory Board.

 

4. New Business:  

4a. Youth Business Mentorship Update: No update for this meeting.

4b. Strategic Planning: Consultant timeline for LAB is to be determined.

4c. Patron Comments: It was noted the uptick in noise complaints. Discussion of who can access the patron comments included how the comments are for business use, and not shared widely.

4d. LAB Expenditures: Ideas for expending funds on the Meet the Director event on February 5 were shared, as were ideas of using expenditures for signage. No action was taken at this time.

4e. LANTERN Survey:  A handout was circulated with some data. Mathew Rose will request again the LAB survey and share with LAB members ahead of the next meeting.

4f. Library Energy Sources:  After discussion, the LAB passed this motion unanimously: We move the Sonoma County Library strongly consider opting for green energy for electricity at the Sebastopol Regional Library.

4g. Meet the Director event: The February LAB meeting will be a joint LAB meeting and a Meet the Director event for the public. LAB members will help encourage attendance through word of mouth, and the Friends of the Sebastopol Library will use their contacts to help promote the event. LATNERN will be asked to promote the event as well.

 

5a. Commissioner Report: Stephen Zollman discussed the LANTERN presentation to the Commission and the pledge of support at lanternlibrary.org. Zollman encouraged the LAB, Friends of Sebastopol Library, and LANTERN to work together on promoting the pledge.

5b. Administration Report:  Lana Adlawan shared a library value: Welcoming. Adlawan reported on a Free Books promotion, author events coming up, the E Street studio, and Chromekits. Adlawan provided an update on generators: discussions with PG&E continue. Suggestions about adding DIY kits to alleviate the wait times were made.

5c. City Liaison Report: None at this time.

5d. Youth Report: None at this time.

5e. Branch Manager Report: Rose reported on an updated look for the monthly events flyer. A past event highlight was the Sebastopol Ballet performing at a storytime. An upcoming program we are working to develop is a trade’s academy for youth ages 16-24 from Lime Foundation.

5f. Friends of Sebastopol Library Report: Sue Fujita shared that the October booksale ended as the Kincaide Fire was erupting, so receipts were less than in previous sales. The board will discuss how the sales handle book sellers with scanners. Friends members with email only contact information have a lower renewal rate than historical renewal rates.

5g. LANTERN Report:  LANTERN made a presentation to the Library Commission. They will give a presentation City Council.
