WINDSOR REGIONAL LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD

5:00 pm. Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Windsor Regional Library - 9291 Old Redwood Highway, Bldg. 100

  1. CONVENING: 5:00 p.m.

Present-LAB members: Pam Arnold, Brenda Balding, “D” Graner; Alys Hay, Mike Neely. Also present: Library Commissioner Randall Neff; Branch Manager Aleta Dimas; Tiffany Bronzan, Library Ken Nieman, Town Manager John Jansons, Cheryl LaSalle (prospective LAB member)

  1. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
  2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Approved with correction to spelling: ‘Vicki’ instead of ‘Vicky’ in 4.4.
  3. REPORTS & UPDATES
    1. TOWN COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT:  John Jansons said the plan is still to build out the Town Green and replace Huerta Gym with a hotel, but that will not happen right away.  The plan to build apartments by Oliver’s has been approved and the developer should be able to start as soon as the ground dries out.  The new General Plan has been approved and now the Council needs to clean up the zoning code.  There is still a plan for a pedestrian walkway between the east and west sides of 101 but that also will not happen right away.  The library pointed out that better signage is needed to town offices because people stop in the library for directions frequently.
    2. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT:   Ken Nieman said the refresh of the Northwest Branch is almost complete and should be ready in about a month.  The 2018-19 budget was passed (it is flat due to potential impact of the fires).  Extended Saturday hours started last week.
    3. LIBRARY COMMISSIONER’S REPORT:   Commissioner Neff said book handling and some administrative offices have moved to Rohnert Park.  The library participated in the Windsor Business Expo in March.  The Library audit was completed without any problems being found.  A new telephone system has been installed.  Some 3D printers have been purchased (1 for Windsor) as well as other equipment.
    4. BRANCH MANAGER’S REPORT:   Aleta Dimas was welcomed as the new branch manager.  Donna Scornavacca has been promoted to Library Specialist and the library is recruiting library aides for summer reading.  The Library Commission approved new doors for next year (funding to be discussed with the town).  Vicki Chavez will be receiving training on the use of the 3D printer.  The library will be represented at Windsor’s Earth Day celebration April 22.  Tiffany will represent the branch at the Dia de los niños event.  The Town of Windsor Police Chief will be a special guest at a story time.  The Friends are funding a kick-off for the summer reading program (movie night on the Town Green with music).  Vicki organized a presentation on Social Security; there was a successful Paint Party (to be repeated) and there were 17 teens at a 2-day SAT preparation course.

HOMEWORK HELP PROGRAM UPDATE:  We started out having homework help on    Tuesday and had 12-15 children each week but then Windsor started paying teachers to help with homework and attendance fell.  We moved the program to Wednesday but attendance is low.  The Middle School has started allowing 40 minutes per day 4 days a week so students can seek help from teachers.  We will review how to proceed after the end of the school year.

    1. FRIENDS OF THE WINDSOR LIBRARY REPORT:  The annual Spring Art Show will be “Captured Moments”, a photographic exhibit.  Opening is April 16 and the reception will be April 18.  The book cart is doing well (partly because the Northwest Branch has ben closed).  The Friends will hold sales at the Farmer’s Market on:  May 20, June 17, July 29, August 26, and September23.  There will be a quilt raffle again this year.
