Sebastopol Library Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
April 5, 2017

Present: Mary Shiff, JT O’Neill, Walt Frazer, Nancy Dempsey, Brett Lear (Library Director), Angelina Cacioppo (SCL Community Engagement Coordinator), Mathew Rose (Sebastopol Regional Library), Helena Whistler (Library Commissioner), Sue Fujita (Friends of Sebastopol Library).


I. Mary Shiff, Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm. The Agenda and Minutes from February 1, 2017, were approved with corrections.
II. Public Comment: none.
III. Announcements: none.


Va. Commissioner Report: Helena Whistler reported on the new property being utilized in Rohnert Park for Materials Management and delivery truck security. The property would allow for MM to move from the Central Santa Rosa Library and trucks to move from Sonoma County properties. The Library Commissioner representing Cotati retired from the Commission. Linda Garcia, representative of Santa Rosa, is the new Vice-Chair. The Roseland Coalition met with Supervisor Hopkins regarding a library facility in Roseland. Ms. Whistler is making a report to the Sebastopol City Council on April 18. Information regarding SCA-3 was shared. The bill would lower the voter threshold for funding library bond measures from 66% to 55%.
Vb. Director Report: Brett Lear reported the budget workshop allocated 11.5 million for increased staffing and collections for the 2017/2018 fiscal year. The 17/18 budget will be the first full fiscal year with Measure Y funding. The budget includes funds for computer labs, new phones, upgrades to facilities and leasing plans for best sellers. Mr. Lear mentioned Monday hours are being added starting May 1, 2017.
Vc. City Liaison Report: No report.
Vd. Youth Report: none.
Ve. Branch Manager Report: Mathew Rose shared information on the recruitment for staff at the Sebastopol Regional Library to expand open hours, as well as the children’s librarian vacancy. Volunteer statistics were shared: in January, February, March of 2017, the Sebastopol Regional Library utilized 854 hours of volunteer labor from 48 volunteers. Mr. Rose shared he had joined the Steering Committee of Cittaslow Sebastopol and is spearheading the non-profit networking project. Mr. Rose asked if the LAB members had input on library projects, focusing on 1) art in the library forum room, expanding beyond two months of art shows to having as much art in the forum room as possible; 2) art on the outside of the library (the student art banner pilot project); and 3) Lunch at the Library. The LAB members expressed opinions and provided guidance.
Vf. Friends of the Sebastopol Library Report: Sue Fujita reported that the Friends of Sebastopol Library Spring booksale will take place from May 10-14. The Friends of Sebastopol Library annual meeting will
take place on May 20 and feature members of the Santa Rosa Symphony. The All Friends Meeting will take place on May 27 in Guerneville.
Vg. LANTERN Report: Mr. Rose and Ms. Whistler reported that LANTERN has received preliminary design sketches from a local architect. The design sketches would be used for fundraising purposes, if adopted by the LANTERN board with input from stakeholders.
